Cherry Receives Volunteer Champion Award

Sen. Cherry given Michigan Nonprofit Association award honoring volunteers who make a difference in their communities

LANSING - The Michigan Nonprofit Association honored Sen. Deb Cherry (D-Burton) yesterday with the 2009 Servant Leadership Award for outstanding personal dedication to civic engagement and service. This award is one of four Michigan Volunteer Champion Awards given to state legislators at the 2009 Michigan Giving and Volunteering Celebration.

“There is nothing more rewarding than to finding a way to share your time and energy to help your neighbors and give back to your community,” said Sen. Cherry. “Volunteering costs nothing, and its impact is lasting. I would encourage all Michigan citizens to find ways to get involved in their communities and share their talents.”

The Michigan Giving and Volunteering celebration is an annual event that celebrates the many ways in which Michigan volunteers and philanthropists are making a difference in their communities.

Sen. Cherry has served her community for over thirty years in various capacities. She is a regular American Red Cross blood donor and has volunteered and supported efforts of Habitat for Humanity, including Genesee County Chapter. During her time as an elected official, she has supported volunteer efforts of many groups and organizations. Sen. Cherry serves on numerous boards, including Chairman of Greater Flint Health Coalition and a member of the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Michigan Prospect, the Genesys CEO Council and the IMA Board, a group that provides educational and recreational opportunities for children and youth.
