LANSING — People attending the third annual “Southeast Oakland County Senior Salute” on Monday, Oct. 4 at the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market will have the chance to win a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card, said host Sen. John Pappageorge, R-Troy.

“The Southeast Oakland County Senior Salute continues to grow every year because it’s a great opportunity for seniors to meet new friends and enjoy a hot meal. The best part is, the salute is free of charge,” Pappageorge said. “The addition of the $1,000 gift card this year is a huge bonus that will have a dramatic impact on one lucky senior’s life. You don’t want to miss the salute this year.”

In addition to the gift card door prize donated by Wal-Mart, the event will also feature a hot lunch sponsored by Ponderosa Steakhouse. The gift card recipient must be present to win.

The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the farmer’s market, located at 316 E. Eleven Mile Road, two blocks east of Main Street in Royal Oak.

The salute also will feature entertainment, door prizes, games, health screenings, a cloth bag to store all of the vendor giveaways and much more. Those interested in flu shots are asked to bring their insurance card.

The event is organized by Pappageorge and the Southeast Oakland Community Fund, a 501c4 nonprofit organization.

American House Senior Living Communities is this year’s “platinum sponsor.” Gold sponsors are Beaumont Hospitals and DTE Energy, while silver sponsors include CVS Caremark, Guardian Angel Home Care, Michigan Podiatric Medical Association, Molina Health Care, Oakland Community College, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and Waltonwood of Royal Oak.

Seniors can obtain additional information about the event by calling (517) 488-7866.

Those interested in sponsoring, donating or volunteering should contact Jackie Mosher in Pappageorge’s office at the same phone number.

“I encourage local seniors to attend this fantastic event to get their flu shot, enjoy a hot lunch and visit with friends,” Pappageorge said. “I look forward to seeing you there.”
