Senate panel discusses higher education funding in Alma

ALMA - The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education discussed the 2009 fiscal year budget and sought feedback from leaders of area colleges and universities in a hearing Friday.
"An education gives our young people a better chance for a job, and our colleges and universities must receive adequate funding, to give back hope to our children," said Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw. "I will work with both the administration and colleges and universities to ensure they have the money they need to provide access to a good education for our students."
Dr. Michael Rao, president of Central Michigan University, testified before the Senate panel in the Tyler-Van Dusen Center on the campus of Alma College. Representatives of Saginaw Valley State University, the American Association of University Professors, and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities also spoke.
Kahn said Alma College is the only private institution in Michigan that the committee will visit during its statewide tour.
"I thank the subcommittee chair, Senator Tony Stamas for having this hearing in Alma," said Kahn. "I appreciate the subcommittee's concern, not only for the larger and research based institutions, but for the smaller schools who also play an important role. Alma College stands as a model for quality education in Michigan."
Stamas, R-Midland, said holding the hearings at colleges and universities across the state allow officials to share the importance of higher education funding.
"We appreciate Senator Kahn extending an invitation and suggesting Alma College as the one private college the committee will visit this year," Stamas said. "It's important for us to see first hand the institutions of higher education that make this state truly great."
