Sen. Pappageorge issues statement on May unemployment data

LANSING ― State Sen. John Pappageorge, R-Troy, expressed his great concern over the new unemployment figures released Wednesday, and reaffirmed his commitment to bringing new jobs to Michigan in the following statement:
“I am dismayed that several key measures to help Michigan’s economy turn the corner have come to a standstill in the House of Representatives. This is troubling news for workers across the state badly in need of a good paying job. If we want Michigan to be more financially sound, then we must not promise money we don’t have and concentrate on smarter state budgeting.
“Helping the state recover is my main focus here in the Senate. In fact, we recently passed a bill to nurture cutting edge energy technologies in Michigan, like carbon capture sequestration utilizing algae. This could do for Michigan what Henry Ford did for the automobile, creating a whole new generation of employment. We are headed in the right direction. Now the House needs to join us and take action on these bills.”
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth released updated employment statistics for Michigan for the month of May, declaring the state’s unemployment rate increased to 8.5 percent, its highest in more than 15 years. The national unemployment rate for the same month was 5.5 percent.
