Sen. Kahns resolution proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month

LANSING — State Sen. Roger Kahn introduced a resolution in the Michigan Senate Wednesday proclaiming Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in the state of Michigan. The state’s celebration is in conjunction with the national month.
“Setting aside this month allows us to recognize the important economic, cultural and social contributions Spanish-speaking people have made to our country,” said Kahn, R-Saginaw Township.
On a national level, Congress first authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim “Hispanic Heritage Week” in September 1968. The week of Sept. 15 and 16 was selected because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively, with Mexico celebrating their bicentennial this year.
The weeklong commemoration was expanded to an entire month by Congress in 1988.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a fantastic opportunity for people across the country to note the rich culture and traditions, and contributions of Hispanic Americans,” Kahn said. “I urge people across Saginaw and Gratiot counties to celebrate Hispanic heritage this month.”
