Thursday, November 03, 2011
LANSING — State Sen. Judy Emmons today invited seniors to learn more about protecting themselves from phone and mail scams at an event this month co-hosted by Montcalm Community College.
“Seniors are increasingly targeted by scam artists and other predators, seeking to prey on them as they make critical decisions concerning their health care and finances,” said Emmons, R-Sheridan. “The Senior Brigade is designed to help seniors learn how to protect themselves from scams and frauds that victimize 5 million seniors nationally each year. I encourage residents to take advantage of this excellent learning opportunity.”
The Senior Brigade event will take place on Monday, Nov. 14 at Montcalm Community College’s Doser Building from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and again from 1:30-3 p.m. The Doser Building is located at 2800 College Drive in Sidney. At the event, representatives of the attorney general’s office will lead a presentation and discussion on recognizing scams initiated over the phone, by email or through the mail.
Space is limited, so please call 989-831-7476 to make a reservation.
“To those unable to attend or for information on protection against other frauds, I urge you to visit the program’s website,” said Emmons, chair of the Senate Families, Seniors and Human Services Committee. “The site is a clearinghouse to bring valuable information to Michigan families and seniors in an easy-to-use format.”
The Senior Brigade is offered through the attorney general’s consumer programs. The brigade and its website were launched in 2009 as a 24-hour-a-day method to provide trusted and useful information on health care issues, financial matters, consumer protection and veteran’s affairs.
Residents may visit the website at www.seniorbrigade.com. Constituents with questions about the program or other senior protection issues may contact Sen. Emmons’ office at 517-373-3760 or by email at email@example.com.
