ABOUT THE SENATE

The Michigan Senate is the upper chamber of the Michigan Legislature, consisting of 38 members elected by the qualified electors of districts having approximately 247,000 to 273,000 residents.

Working alongside the House of Representatives, the Michigan Senate enacts, amends, or repeals state laws; collaborates with the Governor to establish the state budget and appropriate funds; and provides oversight of the executive branch of government.

COMMITTEES

Due to the number and diversity of issues which must be considered throughout each session, the Michigan Senate has established a set of committees, each focusing on its own designated subject area. Committees examine issues within their subject areas and assess proposed legislative items on those topics before forwarding legislative items to the full Senate for consideration. Most Senator and administrative offices are housed in the Binsfeld Office Building, located at 201 Townsend Street, Lansing MI 48933. The Binsfeld Office Building is dedicated to former Lt. Governor Connie Binsfeld and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM. The Binsfeld Office Building is closed on state holidays, with the exception of Election Day.

Senate leadership offices and a number of other offices are located in the Michigan State Capitol, 100 North Capitol Avenue, Lansing MI 48933. The Capitol is open to visitors Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM, and on the first Saturday of each month, 10 AM – 3 PM. The Capitol is closed on state holidays, with the exception of Election Day.
