6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The purpose of this legislatively directed spending item is to address critical safety and usability concerns at Community Center Park, a hub for youth and adult recreation in Ypsilanti Township. The park’s four ball diamonds are heavily utilized for leagues, practices, and community events, yet the fencing surrounding these fields is in a state of disrepair. Current fences have holes, loose sections, and bowed areas from repeated contact, creating hazards for players and diminishing the quality of the facilities. Safety is a top priority of Ypsilanti Township, and replacing these fences demonstrates our commitment to providing safe, high-quality recreational spaces for residents. Replacing these fences with modern, durable materials will provide several public benefits: • Enhanced Safety: Eliminates hazards that could cause injuries to players and spectators. • Increased Accessibility: Ensures facilities meet modern standards, making them safer for all ages and abilities. • Community Engagement: Supports local leagues, youth programs, and family recreation, fostering social connections. • Economic Impact: Well-maintained fields attract tournaments and events, generating revenue for local businesses. • Public Health: Encourages outdoor activity and physical fitness, contributing to healthier lifestyles. • Reduced Liability: Minimizes risk of accidents and potential legal costs for the township. This investment represents an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it improves essential public infrastructure, promotes safety and wellness, and strengthens community resources that benefit thousands of residents annually.
